He's my next door neighbor. He's selling his 1995 Toyota Tacoma. 5 speed, 4x4, 214,000 miles, needs tires, needs catalytic converter, has oil leak. Paint and body are rough but structurally sound.
On the for sale sign he has the KBB value from a few months ago (it's higher now, these things change) which is $1936 for 'fair' condition and his North Carolina property tax value of $1649.
I need help convincing two people on a price. First I need to convince my neighbor that considering that the truck has it's high millage and that it needs tires ($500) a catalytic converter ($250 if I have a shop do it (Ill do it myself for $130) and other things ($) I would be most comfortable paying around $1000.
I need to convince my dad that this is a good price and that my maximum ($1400) isn't too much. These things are listed on craigslist for about $3000 minimum in rough condition. I think I've found a gem.

KBB isn't necessarily close for highly sought after vehicles. Any truck that will drive home is worth $2k min. People like cheap trucks, especially old yotas. Even a similar ranger would be worth $2k.

I'm aware of this. That's why I need to convince my dad to let me spend way less than that on a cheap truck.

Toyota trucks carry high value. With those little things wrong with it, $1000 is an insult. You should be able to find tires & wheels for 500-700 on CL, because they also fit 6 lug Chevy's. If you don't have emissions testing, a test pipe is 40-50. The oil leak could be one of many things though, but as long as it runs good it shouldn't be anything big.

Check the frame for corrosion. This is probably over the 15 year limit for free replacements/buybacks.

I know how much they're worth and $1000 is ridiculously low but that's where the negotiation would start. Realistically I feel $1400 (I know, still low) would be a nice price for this truck. They last forever but it's age is still showing. Worst he can say is no.

It is. But the frame appears solid. Bed has some surface rust though.

Just start naming all the home projects you could use it for. Like getting mulch, rocks, pine straw. Hauling off fallen trees. I can keep going.

Man, I bought my truck for $1510. 86k miles, 2wd, 2.0L/5-speed. Needed full exhaust and needs the frame patched (typical import truck frame rot at the front bed mounts).
A grand for a structurally sound Taco with working 4x4? That's a steal.

Yours has a structurally sound frame though, mine doesn't. Still, good deal!
